Upcoming Classes

24 Hour Live Burn Instructor Course

The purpose of the course is to provide a process for educating students/instructors on the proper techniques and requirements for conducting live fire training evolutions. To ensure that they are conducted in safe facilities and that the exposure to health and safety hazards for the firefighters receiving the training is minimized.
This course is designed for the fire instructor who will be instructing other fire instructors on the proper methods and requirements for conducting and participating in live fire training. This course meets the requirements set by the Dept. of Public Safety, Division of EMS in rule 4765-21-03 (C) of the Ohio Administrative Code.

             Saturday, May 6, 2017

Time:               8:00 am – 5:00 pm          

Location:         Howland Fire Department, 169 Niles-Cortland Rd. NE Warren

Cost:                $150.00 per student (Non-HTC Instructors)

                        Requirements: 

  • Student shall hold a valid fire instructor certificate that is in good standing, issued under rule 4765-21-03 of the Administrative Code.
  • Student shall have an agency sponsor and shall provide a letter signed by their Chief and/or Training Officer approving their participation in the course.     
  • Student shall have successfully completed IS 700, IS/ICS 100, and ICS 200.

                                           Students must provide the following information with the registration form:

  • Copy of Instructor card
  • Letter signed by Chief approving participation in the course.
  • Copy of NIMS 100, 700 and 200 certifications

                       Classes are held Monday thru Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

                       The State fire exam will be given on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Howland Station #30.

Orientation:       Wednesday, May 31, 2017, 6:00 pm

Class size:          Limited to the first 15 eligible people that pay the class fee in full by the May 15 registration deadline.

Prerequisite:      Students may enter the program if they are at least 17 years old and in their final year of high school. 

Students must provide the following information at Orientation:

  • A copy of Ohio driver’s license
  • Completed NFPA compliant physical examination by Doctor – Forms attached or available on website
  • Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification (BCII) check paid for by the candidate.

NIMS:              (National Incident Management System) Effective September 30, 2006, all EMS & Fire                personnel must have NIMS courses IS-100.b and IS-700.a as mandated by the Department of Homeland Security pursuant to Homeland Security Directives HSPD-5 and HSPD-8. Students are responsible for obtaining both courses on-line at www.training.fema.gov

There is no cost to take the courses. A Certificate of Completion will be emailed to you when you successfully complete each course. You must submit copies of your Certificates of Completions for both courses by the required dates shown on your class syllabus.

If you like, you may take these on-line courses prior to the start of class. If you have questions on how to take these courses, more information will be provided by your instructor when the class starts.

ProBoard:       CPR:                All students will be required to take a CPR (BLS – Healthcare Provider) course. The cost of   this class is included in your registration fee.

                        Refund Policy:

                        100% - Withdrawal one (1) week prior to the start of class

                        50% - Approved withdrawal through the second week of class

                         0% - Withdrawal after the second week of class

                        It may take up to 90 days for any refunds. No refund on books once they are used.

                        ProBoard:       Following the issuance of an Ohio Firefighter II certificate to practice, the firefighter will be emailed a notice of eligibility and a link to apply for Pro Board certification. To be eligible, a score of 70% or higher must be obtained on both the level I and level II portions of the exam.

Registration Deadline: May 15, 2017

                        Make checks or money orders payable in full to the Howland Training Center. Purchase orders will only be accepted from Fire Departments. Fire Departments sponsoring students may be eligible for the State Fire Marshal Reimbursement Grant. See State Fire Marshal website for details.

The Howland Township Fire & EMS Training Center will host a OFIRS/NIFRS Refresher class with the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s office.

Date:           Monday, March 20, 2017

Time:          9:00 AM to 11:00 AM

Location:    Howland Station #30, 169 Niles Cortland Road

The course will provide a review of the Ohio Fire Reporting System, address common reporting errors made by departments, define what is a reportable incident and the importance of accurate reporting.

The course will cover the use of the following modules: Basic Module; Fire Module; Structure Fire Module; Civilian Fire Casualty Module and Fire Service Casualty Module and how each module needs to be filled out correctly in order to provide a complete report for the system.

The Howland Township Fire & EMS Training Center will hold Practical Skills Evaluator Class & Refresher. This course is for certified Fire Instructors who wish to serve as skills evaluators on state certification practical examinations. The State requires a refresher every year for this certification.
